Our History In 1986 Pat Beaujot, a professional agronomist who worked for Simplot Canada Ltd. in agronomy and sales, and his brother purchased their parent’s farm. With it, they inherited a six year old air seeder. Pat wanted to change to a reduced tillage operation to conserve soil and increase savings in moisture, time, fuel and tractor hours, but he simply couldn’t do it with the existing seeder.
The brothers reset the old seeder with fertilizer and seed openers to get proper separation between the two. Next, they added a packer. Experts on zero till were advocates of shallow seeding, but there was no machine on the market that would seed shallow accurately, place fertilizer in the proper place (below and to the side of the seed) and pack evenly. Realizing he needed to make more improvements to the seeder, Pat contacted Brian Kent to help him machine and invent the new air seeder.
By 1992, prototypes were being used on the Beaujot farm, Brian Dean was also brought on board to help, and testing commenced in the spring of that year. After a few tweaks to the design, such as changing to a pneumatic tire, the 1000 acre farm was successfully seeded. The entrepreneurs realized what they were on to, and the Beaujots, Kents and Brian Dean formed Seed Hawk Inc. paying tribute to the hawks that follow the seeder looking for mice. They produced and sold six seeders in 1992-1993.
The company advanced quickly. In 2006, Seed Hawk partnered with Väderstad-Verken AB of Sweden, and their technology and exports expanded drastically. In 2007, they introduced the 84 foot tool bar, and when combined with the 800 bushel air tank, is the largest seeding system in the world.
Today, Pat Beaujot is still President of the company, Brian Dean is Vice-President and R&D Manager, and Väderstad-Verken AB is a minority shareholder. Seed Hawk Inc. now has: • 39,000 square feet of construction space • 6,000 square feet of office space • Over 75 employees • Completed phase 1 of the expansion • Over 900 machines in the field • 14 dealers representing 29 locations in western Canada and the United States
Looking further down the road, they see many Väderstad technologies that will benefit Seed Hawk customers, and make it easy to maintain their core operating philosophy: to do the best, to be flexible and to meet the grower’s needs.
